Trust True Nature. Be a vulnerable Master. Murray uses a report of a direct experience from a participant of a recent EI as an example for examining and understanding the often difficult territory of the post breakthrough world.

Identity, Dis-identification, and No-self. There is what we think we are and what we actually are. The fundamental action of the Enlightenment Intensive technique is to dis-identify from the self. Charles Berner’s chapter on “De-Identification” is clear and on point. But what is an identity, what is it for, how does it function, and how do we move out of false identities? Related to identity is the question of “no self”, which is a fundamental doctrine of Buddhism. How can we understand this teaching and reconcile it with the intention of directly experiencing a “true self”? Murray and Almaas address these questions.

Understanding Ego Activity. The mind is not just storage, it is an actor. It conditions how we relate to this moment. Thus the mind determines how people function and practice in an EI. Drawing on the work of Charles Berner and A.H. Almaas.

Energy and Enlightenment. Charles Berner’s chapter on energy and how it may manifest in an EI, since an EI releases divine energy to some degree or another, and energy is always a factor in a direct experience.

Presence 2. Continuation from previous week. The kind of Knowing we cultivate as Masters is knowing of Being — the embodiment of which is what the word Presence points to. The connection dyad is used again, to notice how a relationship is ever-changing and flowing, and to practice being in presence by attending to a relationship.

Presence 1. Presence is an essential quality which can powerfully enhance dyad contemplation. What is Presence? How is it known? What role does presence play in listening? in expression? in Mastership? Presence is a corrective to being goal-oriented in an EI. When you are going for ‘it’, you are missing what’s here now. The connection dyad is used.

Questions and Questioning. What does it mean to work on the various enlightenment intensive instructions? What’s the difference between Who and What? Murray teaches that rather than finding an answer to the question, the actual action of questioning, the process of discovery — a loving, adventurous, courageous, let’s-see-spirit — is the key to unfolding with the EI technique. A. H. Almaas’ and Charles Berner’s teachings about how to do inquiry are woven together.

The Characteristics of True Nature. A. H. Almaas’ five facets or characteristics of True Nature, from: Spacecruiser, Chapter 3, “The Adventure of Being”. Outlined first from the perspective of the realized state, then how they manifest in normal experience when seen through veils. The most central facet is knowingness.

On Courage. If we, [as Masters,] are endeavouring to support people in overcoming their egos, it behooves us to have done a little work on our own behalf so that we aren’t coming from our egos. This takes courage. Drawing on A. H. Almaas’ chapter The Courageous Heart, in Diamond Heart 4.

Ego Deficiency. We all have it. Where it comes from, how it works, how it’s denied and avoided. Understanding and transforming (or beginning to transform) ego deficiency is core. In this work, whether we are contemplating ourselves or supporting others in inquiry and coming to True Nature, this issue is going to be there for you at some level. Almaas’ chapters 29-31 in Pearl Beyond Price are a great adjunct to Charles Berner’s teachings.

The Will and Deficiency.
HI Everyone. I woke up thinking about the Will, I mean the true will.
What goes on in life is a battle between one’s love for the truth and one’s idea of being deficient, not ready. Some people don’t like to think of it being a battle because they don’t like war, they want spiritual practice to be all sweetness and harmony. But their resistance is in itself a symptom of the battle, they’ve already capitulated. It’s a battle between Yes OK I will, and No, I don’t even want to hear about it. I’m not the one, That’s too much I’m not enough. I wouldn’t be able to make it.
And in our case for beginning Masters this takes the form, “I’ll follow but I won’t lead.”
This is a big deal, it is right at the start of things, because, – listen- this idea of oneself as unwilling, unready, stands on the fundamental fact of ego life, the sense of being deficient.
Now the opposite of being deficient is being grandiose.
And the humble and conscientious ego says “Well I don’t want to be a false leader.” and this is a very powerful argument. And usually things come to a halt right there. That feels true, that feels like integrity, You believe it and do not bestir yourself. You’re just being honest.
But wait a minute. YOU are not false. You know Truth, You are Truth, Your will is to serve Truth.
So with fear and trembling you go forward and trust and do it anyway.
We should talk about this.
Love, Murray.

Support and True Will 2.
HI Everyone. We’ve missed the last two Saturdays, but we’re back on track tomorrow.
Before this break we were looking at the theme of support, what it means to be there for others, and why one might want to take on the role of supporting others. We looked at the possibility and danger of attempting to use the role of being a Master to enhance oneself and we contrasted that motivation with the authentic dharma of serving others.
I want to continue looking at support and essential Will. There are numerous chapters in the Transmission of Truth that implicitly deal with Will/support — Being a Master, Facing a Crisis, Getting a Participant Through the Obstacles to Enlightenment, Talking Over a Participant’s Experience With Him or Her, and Blood on the Path — are all founded on the assumption that the Master has and can act on his/her own support. All are great, and I encourage you to study them.
The dimension of support is important beyond the staff-participant relationship. One form that support or Will takes is important in the art of contemplation. This is the will to be. Another form is important for everyone’s functioning (staff and participants both) when the intensive is over. I’d like to take some time tomorrow to talk about these forms and to inquire into them.
Preliminary to this discussion, let me list the qualities implicit in Support- Essential Will. These are:, solidity, strength, confidence, trust, definiteness, clarity. Without support one feels: needy, deficient, lost, weak, ungrounded, confused, helpless.
Support is a subtle quality, it’s like trust or like good health. When it’s there one takes it for granted and doesn’t really appreciate its importance. It’s only when it’s lost that one realizes its foundational importance in the psyche. I’ve attached an excerpt from Almaas’ “Point Of Existence” to this letter. It’s good, print it and keep it. It’s all about Support!!!
Love, Murray.
